White’s:

I am sending pictures of my latest finds with my 5900 Di Pro. I got a call from a buddy last Friday evening asking if I wanted to do some relic hunting the next day. I was rather hesitant to go because of the dry spell here in Central VA. I met Tony the next morning around 7 o’clock. We were hunting civil war trenches that according to the locals have been hunted quite heavily.

The first signal my buddy got was a fired bullet. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all! A little while later I recovered a dropped bullet, and then very slowly began moving in between two trees. I got a signal with a VDI of about 60-70 that was fairly solid but rather weak, since I had the sensitivity turned down on my machine because of the bad ground.

I raked away 6 inches of leaves and checked the signal again, still there. I started digging, or rather, chopping my way through about 7 inches of extremely dry ground, including roots. I almost decided to give it up. I stuck my probe in the bottom of the hole and got an indication, so I carefully used my trowel to pry away the remaining soil, and felt something give way in the bottom of the hole. I reached in and Wow! I couldn’t believe my eyes! A beautifully preserved US box plate with hooks still attached!

Just goes to show, don’t give up on a dig, and don’t use dry weather as an excuse to stay home, especially if you own a White’s detector! Also I found 3 more dropped bullets between 3-6 inches. What a great day!

Thanks,
