My metal detecting "life" started in 2007 when Santa brought my son Jon a toy detector for Christmas. We went to the local high school football field and spent three hours digging pennies, dimes and quarters. At that point, we were both hooked. After that experience, I decided it was time for me to buy a "big boy's detector". I did my research. I compared different brands' capabilities. I talked to people and asked questions online and finally chose the Whites MXT.

When the metal detector arrived and the snow finally melted at the end of March of this year, Jon and I made regular trips to the town parks hunting and digging. We found lots of clad, some silver charms, a few silver rings and other "cool stuff". Last week, we got permission to search the property around an old house in town. After about an hour of hunting and finding one or two wheat pennies, Jon was getting bored and I was getting tired. All of the sudden, I got a 55 VDI reading at about 6 inches. Jon's response was, "It's just a zinc penny dad". At 6 inches, I figured we should dig. We dug our plug and what was lying at the bottom? An Indian head penny!!! After doing an Indian penny dance, we wet a cloth and cleaned the penny up. It turned out to be an 1875 in VF condition.

On the way home, Jon summed up the metal detecting hobby as only an 11 year old can. He said, "What could be better than a boy and his dad searching for buried treasure". That is what metal detecting is all about!
