Large gold specimens found with the GMT!
I have been an avid detectorist since 1973 when my dad bought me my first detector at the age of 4. I mostly hunted for coins and relics until about 1990, when I started nugget shooting. I have owned and used many different detector brands over the years until I used the Goldmaster II. Nothing I had used up to that point could compare the sensitivity of the White's and I found thousands of nice placer and specimen nuggets with the Goldmaster II. This year I decided that it was time to retire the old Goldmaster and purchase a GMT. The first time out with it I was impressed with its ease of operation and I love the iron I.D. Meter. The automatic ground balancing is very fast and is a feature I really like. It is so much easier to use than the older models. I took it to one of my favorite places to detect, an old pocket mine dump in Eastern Oregon. In past detecting trips to this location I had located dozens of nice pieces of ore that the old timers had inadvertently thrown onto the tailing dump. They did not have the ability to "see" into the rocks like we can today with the aid of modern metal detectors. I had only been detecting for 20 minutes when I received a large, loud signal on a 40lb piece of calcite. The Iron I.D. said "5-10". I turned the boulder over and detected under it, just in case it was a signal under the rock, but it was the rock itself that was giving the signal. The signal was much louder on one side than it was on the other. I looked at the rock and couldn't see any gold in it but the GMT could. I loaded the rock up and took it home. I broke the rock apart and ended up with some nice sized specimens with gold showing in the calcite. I then soaked them in muriatic acid until the beautiful wire gold could be easily seen. These are some of the prettiest specimens I have found to date, and I wouldn't have had the ability to find them without the GMT. Thanks White's for the awesome detector. I hope to find many more like this in the future. Eddie (OR) |
