Gold Is Where You Find It

A set of medical forceps? A silver communion vase. An ignition key to an early 1930's Ford. A bronze Roman provincial coin dating to the reign of an ancient emperor. License plates, bronze letter openers, a 1.07 carat near flawless diamond ring, and jewelry of every conceivable notion; tools from the shop, class rings over the span of a century, knick-knacks from tourist shops, and bottle caps, pull-tabs, dog tags, coins, coins, and more coins galore. But who would ever think that metal detecting one's home beaches could provide a gold crown --- not one, but four, over a short span of time.

A "crown" refers to the restoration of teeth, using materials that are fabricated which are cemented into place. A crown is used to cap or completely cover a tooth.

Full gold crowns consist entirely of a single piece of alloy. Although referred to as a gold crown, this type of crown is actually composed of many different types of elements, including but not limited to gold, platinum, palladium, silver, copper, and tin. Full gold crowns are of better quality when they are high in noble content. According to the American Dental Association, full gold crown alloys can only be labeled as high noble when they contain at least 75% noble metal.

Finding one of these precious little spots of gold with a metal detector rings up speculation and intrigue --- the kind of stuff one reads about in a mystery novel. Be that as it may, there has been more than one treasure hunter from west to east and points abroad, who has wished to personify his finds, hoping they could reveal their secrets and origins. But for the mysteries that will forever remain mysteries, and the stories they incite, the gold crown discoveries these past few years are a curiosity for this beach detectorist, only to be surpassed in future hunts by the next mysterious, unexplainable find.

Best to you!

Dear Whites Electronics:

My husband and I have been metal detecting together for about a year now. I became interested in the hobby after seeing how much fun he was having with it. Well that and all that jewelry he was bringing home.

For the past two years he has raved about this one park. After adding up all the finds from this park he came up with over $2000 in quarters and over 6oz of silver jewelry but no Gold of course he never looked for it. With the DFX I can set the metal detector to hunt what I want to hunt while not being bothered with unwanted trash.

Well yesterday still a little chilly we decided would have at this park one more time. My husband set his DFX to hunt Silver and I set my DFX to hunt Gold. Now keep in mind my husband has never pulled Gold from this park. We each went our separate ways and as I looked over he was pulling target after target and I wasn't having much luck with the Gold and almost changed my settings. I got a solid hit in the Gold range, wow what a ring 6grams of 24k Gold and 10 small diamond chips. I wish I would have had a picture of my husbands face when he saw the ring. After seeing the ring he changed his DFX settings like I did using the block edit feature and said I knew there was Gold here!!!!!!!

He laughed and said, "See I was clearing the way for you", I think not LOL. Thank you Whites for a really fun hobby, a great metal detector, and one of many Gold Rings. I just had to show you this one. Had it not been for the DFX this ring would still be 5" under the surface. I don't think my husband will be looking for silver and quarters anymore LOL.

Hello White’s,

I recently joined the local detecting club here in Paradise , Ca. called the Paradise Ridge Diggers. My son and I have attended two meetings and our second outing with the club. They held a coin shoot on February 8, 2009 and this would be a first coin shoot for me in my detecting career. I detect everyday for an hour or so weather permitting and any chance I get to enjoy this great hobby with others.

I have my DFX and a brand new 10” D2 coil I bought from a local dealer Roper’s Detectors in Marysville, Ca.. I have been really enjoying the power and smoothness of the new coil over the stock 950 here in Northern Ca. soils. I did not hesitate to use it for the coin shoot. I run the preset (coin/jewelry) program and I hit it hard. 3 hour hunt I pulled over 50 coins and won both 1st and 2nd place prizes in the end for most coins dug and the most points total. I pulled a lot of the club coins that had been planted down around 4 inches but I also recovered some old nickels and wheat cents that where in the ground already at depths of 8 to 10 inches. I was the only one to get a bunch of deep coins aside from another fellow running an MXT. Just shows you the power of the DFX and MXT to get deep coins. I had a blast and won a 1921 silver dollar for first prize and a medieval Spain coin from 1379-1390 for second place. I owe this to the smooth power of the new D2 in combo with my DFX. I have never had so much fun! I have enclosed some pictures of the hunt and my prizes.

I will be having another first later this week as I am going to a family reunion in Southern Ca. where I will spend some time detecting the beach and surf with an original White’s Surfmaster. Old but good! I can’t wait maybe we I will have another great adventure to share like the coin shoot last weekend!

Thanks White’s for a great machine and coil.
Jason M.
